What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms and legs, and headaches.

Doctors of chiropractic, referred to as chiropractors, practice a hands on approach called adjusting or spinal manipulation. They perform a physical examination, neurological and orthopedic diagnostic testing and treatment. Chiropractors have a wide range of diagnostic skill and are trained to recommend rehabilitative exercises, in addition to nutritional and lifestyle needs. Chiropractic is a drug free practice and lifestyle!

Chiropractors perform adjustments in order to restore the integrity of a hypomobile joint. Joints can become hypomobile as a result of tissue injury from a fall or accident, repetitive muscle stresses like prolonged sitting or typing, or biochemical stresses and nutritional deficiencies that cause inflammation. When tissues are damaged and inflamed, pain and decreased mobility occurs. An adjustment can be applied through a controlled force to restore proper motion to the joint, decrease pain and ease muscular tension. The adjustment allows healing to take place. Several adjustments are often required to re-educate the body to maintain its proper position.
